The Najmat Development District Cooling Plant is a critical infrastructure facility located in the heart of Reem Island, Abu Dhabi, designed to provide sustainable and efficient cooling services to the surrounding development zones.
As part of this high-value infrastructure project, High Deep Foundation Contracting L.L.C. (HDFC) was appointed as the Enabling Contractor for the Najmat Development District Cooling Plant project at Reem Island, Abu Dhabi. The scope comprised comprehensive shoring, piling, and testing works to support deep excavation and permanent structural foundations under complex site conditions.

Scope of Work

Executed by High Deep

HDFC executed extensive secant pile shoring works to safely retain excavation up to a maximum depth of 15 meters. The shoring system was designed and installed to ensure excavation stability, control ground movement, and protect adjacent structures.

1️⃣ Shoring Works

  • Installation of 481 secant piles with 1000 mm diameter, constructed to varying depths as per design requirements.
  • Total shoring length included:
    • 335 linear meters of outer shoring, supported by:
      • 335 L.M capping beam
      • 600 L.M steel strut pipe supports with 32 corbels

2️⃣Internal Shoring Works

  • Length: 65 linear meters of secant piles
  • Pile Specification: 80 piles of 750 mm diameter.
  • Depth Range: Ranging from 6 m to 8 m

    ➡️ Shoring system supported with one level of bracing to ensure structural integrity during excavation stages.

These systems were designed and installed to stabilize the excavation perimeter, ensuring complete soil retention and structural safety during the deep foundation and basement construction phases.

3️⃣Piling Works

  • Quantity: 322 foundation piles
  • Pile Diameter: 1.0 meter
  • Depth Range: 10 to 20 meters (varied cut-off and toe levels)

These cast-in-situ bored piles form the main foundation system for the cooling plant, providing vertical and lateral load-bearing capacity required for the facility’s structural and operational stability.

To ensure the highest levels of quality, safety, and reliability, HDFC conducted extensive field and laboratory testing in compliance with international standards:

  • 3 Working Load Tests (WLT)
  • 1 Preliminary Load Test (PLT)
  • 16 Dynamic Load Tests (DLT)
  • 32 Sonic Integrity Tests (SIT)
  • 322 Pile Integrity Tests (PIT)

All tests confirmed optimal performance, pile integrity, and compliance with engineering specifications.
